George C. Burch was born July 29, 1840 in Augusta, (Richmond County) Georgia. On April 5,1861 at Madison, Florida , he enlisted in Company F. 1st Florida Infantry. Mustered out on April 4, 1862. Transferred to Company F, Florida 1st Infantry Battalion on April 4, 1862. Mustered out on Aug 15, 1862. Transferred to Company B, Florida 1st Infantry Regiment on Aug 15, 1862. Promoted to Full 3rd Corporal Nov 1, 1863. Description : 5'6", Gray Eyes, Dark Hair. He was wounded in the leg at the Battle of Missionary Ridge, near Chattanooga, Tn November 25,1863 and was taken prisoner. He was sent to Fort Delaware and was held prisoner till the close of the war. Ft Delaware was located across from Deleware City, Delaware. During the Civil War, beginning in1862, the island became a prison for captured Confederate and local Southern sympathizers. The property extended over six acres and was on Pea Patch Island. The Fort had with 32-foot high granite and brick walls, from seven to thirty feet thick. A total of 32,000 prisoners passed through Fort Delaware. The prisoners were held in wooden barricks outside of the fort. He served as Property Appraiser for Lafayette County Florida 1885-1887. He filed for a soldier's pension at Taylor County in 1904. He died in 1916 and is buried in Perry, Florida. He married Mary Elizabeth Davis on Jan 28, 1873. She was born in Jasper, Ala on Sept 26, 1849. Mary died Nov 19, 1907 and is buried in Perry, Fl.
